March 2006 Newsletter Spoken like a man who truly knows what the inside of a woodshed looks like. Reportedly, Bach could improvise multi-voice fugues with alarming ingenuity and grace (up to 8 voices - yikes!!). That kind of feat is born of genius first, and technical acuity a close second. And that kind of technique comes only with hours upon hours of practice, of which I'm sure Bach did his share. This quote spoke to me particularly because I've been doing a bit of that "shedding" myself lately. It takes time to figure out what the "right keys" and the "right times" are - especially when you're talking about improvising. I have a good deal of respect for Bach - whom I consider the first jazzer. On to Seaside Brass news. Those promised changes to the website are starting to happen. The "Mixed Ensemble" subheading underneath "Our Ensembles" in the sidebars has been removed. It was a bit confusing and unclear as a section. Ultimately, I decided to remove it altogether because #1) We no longer offer "Gypsea" as an ensemble, and #2) I wanted to group Maritime Wind Corps with "brass ensembles" to make it easier to find (it was previously grouped with "mixed ensembles" due to the inclusion of woodwind instruments in the group). This month we officially welcome Chris Cornette into the fold. Chris will be our go-to guy for classical french horn in Seaside Brass. He will also make appearances in The Patriots and Maritime Wind Corps. A full bio for Chris will be up in the "Member Bios" section soon. Chris brings a more traditional sound to the group than we've been used to. Jamie's baritone sound was always welcome, and unique - but, there's nothing quite like the sound of a good old fashioned french horn! (or the expensive new one Chris just bought). Good to have you on board! Stay tuned for more tweaks to come. Happy Birthday Heather! - Karl Soukup, Proprietor |
