"Everything that is really great and inspiring is created by the individual who can labor in freedom."

- Albert Einstein

Many great thinkers, musicians, and artists have fled to America to escape the oppression of their respective countries. Einstein himself (along with many other scientists) fled Nazi Germany in the 30's. During this period, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Hindemeth, and other titans of music also left Europe for the more broadminded US. In 1959 many composers and musicians fled to America when Fidel Castro's revolutionary forces took control of Cuba. In America, those great artists and minds have found fertile soil in which to grow their talents - a land of freedom and opportunity.

This month, I reflect on their reasons for coming here, and I am thankful for being born in this great nation.
Yes, we face some huge social, economical, and political problems - but the essence of this month's quote still remains true. Freedom is what makes this country great: the freedom to do or say whatever moves us without fear of persecution. When coupled with hard work, it is a limitless force capable of creating greatness.

On to the news. The "Peter & the Wolf" video is nearly completed. Go to the Projects in the Works section to see a clip. In this section, you can also hear clips of some new "light classics" we've been arranging for weddings and such (to be posted by the 10th). Progress is slow in obtaining our 501c3 status - stay tuned.

On a personal note, and in the theme of freedom, I was recently accepted as an Apprentice Freemason at the John D. Spreckels lodge.

Happy 4th of July!
